The radio campaign "I am a child but I have my rights too !" has been produced by Plan in West Africa since 1998 in collaboration with almost 100 radio stations.
The shows inform parents, children and authorities of their roles and responsibilities in order to respect the United Nations Convention on Rights of the Child (CRC). The stories promote their right to go to school, to have access to drinking water, to grow up in good health etc. Hundreds of children have taken part in recording these shows.
Nine West African countries have set up the project and broadcast the radio campaign : Burkina Faso, Guinea, Togo, Mali, Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Benin, Niger and Cameroon.
Theatre plays and sketches are produced by children and professional actors. Interviews, debates and competitions are also part of the programmes broadcast by around twenty radio stations in each country (public, private, rural and community). The productions were produced in several languages : Moore, Bambara, Mina, Cotocoli, Kabie, Wolof, Fula, Serere, Diola, Kissi, Toma, Kpele, Maninka, Susu, Creole and Adja, as well as in Portuguese and French.
Until now, nearly 600 productions of stories have been made and thousands of programmes broadcast and heard throughout the sub-region with children’s participation.
This project is funded by Nokia
