The African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child was adopted in July 1990 during the 26th Organization of African Unity (OAU) Conference of Heads of State and Government.
It came into force on 29 November 1999.
The Charter guarantees all those below eighteen years old the inherent right to life, education and health; it also guarantees them the right to be protected from all forms of economic exploitation. It forbids using capital punishment for crimes committed by children or recruiting children to fight in armed conflict.
